Check interest and adult effort together
A reward can be a choice within something the family already plans to do. Ask which options matter to the child and which an adult can deliver without new purchases. A playlist choice has a different effort level from organizing an outing. Keep a range of choices small and realistic. Ordinary affection and time with an adult do not need to be earned; a reward can add a special activity choice while everyday care remains unconditional.
A worked family example
Low-prep choices include picking the family board game or a playlist for a shared activity. A larger planned choice might be a home craft session with supplies already available.
A plan to adapt
| Part of the plan | A concrete choice |
|---|---|
| Low preparation | Choose the family game or shared-activity playlist |
| Uses existing supplies | Plan a home craft session |
| Needs scheduling | Library visit or adult-led outing |
| Exclude | Basic care, meals, affection and necessary rest |
Try this in your household
- Ask for two activity choices the child values.
- Mark options that need no purchase.
- Check preparation and availability.
- Offer only choices you can follow through on.
Where the app can help
LvlUpKids turns responsibilities into quests, lets a child submit finished work, and lets a parent review it before approved XP goes toward a family-chosen reward. See how LvlUpKids turns chores into parent-approved quests, XP and chosen rewards.
