Expect to help more than once
ZERO TO THREE explains that sharing develops over time, and its guidance for ages 24–36 months emphasizes repeated adult help with social conflicts. A child who can take a turn today may still struggle tomorrow. One successful interaction does not mean an adult can leave the children to resolve every dispute. ZERO TO THREE guidance. Make this moment manageable
Describe what is happening without judging either child. Help protect the child using the toy from grabbing, and help the waiting child find something to do. Model an easy request. A short, adult-supported exchange is enough to practice; there is no need to turn it into a fairness lecture. ZERO TO THREE guidance.
Prepare the play space
Before visitors arrive, decide which special possessions can be put away and which toys will be available together. A few similar play options can make an illustrative plan easier. Stay alert to safety and the children's cues. If play is no longer manageable, simplify or pause it rather than insist they demonstrate sharing while overwhelmed.
Two children want the same truck
An illustrative family example. Adapt it to your own situation.
- Move close and prevent grabbing or hurting.
- Name the wish briefly for both children.
- Help the waiting child with another play option.
- Support a turn change when it is workable; remain involved.
You both want the truck. Alex is using it now. I’ll help you ask for a turn and find something to do while you wait.
